Hyalur-what now? It’s a bit of a tongue twister, but getting through that heavy helping of syllables is well worth the effort.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (that’s hy·al·uron·ic) is actually a substance that’s naturally occurring in our bodies. It helps retain water in areas like your connective tissue and skin.
But don’t let the “acid” part fool you. We’ll admit that it sounds like the kind of thing that you’d want to keep at arm’s length, but this ingredient has no burn-y, melt-y qualities. It’s actually super gentle and great for even for the most sensitive skin, and these days it’s the word on the street for good reason.
What does it do?
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant (hyoo/meck/tant). That’s a fancy name for a category of ingredients that draw moisture from their surroundings.
The cool thing about hyaluronic acid is that is has the ability to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. That a lot. One gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to six LITERS of water (is that more or less than what an ant can do?).
Who should use it?
Hyaluronic Acid is an absolute hero ingredient for dry and dehydrated skin, helping it to look and feel smoother, softer and healthier. It’s also offers excellent anti-aging benefits. That’s because as we age our skin loses its ability to retain moisture, and dehydrated skin can more easily show fine lines and wrinkles.
But the reality is that, in the skincare world more moisture is almost always a good thing, and because this ingredient is safe for all skin types it should be on everyone’s list.
